Women Who Rock: In the Pages of Rolling Stone

Janis Joplin, Adele, Joan Jett and more on
their inspirations and struggles:

Janis Joplin

"That's the good thing about women, man. Because they sing they fuckin' insides, man. Women to be in the music business give up more than you'd ever know. She's got kids she gave up, any woman gives up home life, an old man, probably, you give up a home and friends, children and friends, you give up an old man and friends, you give up every constant in the world except music. That's the only thing in the world you got, man. So for a woman to sing, she really needs to or wants to. A man can do it as a gig, because he knows he can get laid tonight." (February 17th, 1972)

Lara Stones Stars: Hot Chip’s Music Video

Lara Stone captains a spaceship to Earth in Hot Chip's music video for the song "Night & Day."
Peter Serafinowicz directed the video: A cult led by British actor Terence Stamp dances to summon two beings from outer space — played admirably by Stone and musician Reggie Watts. When Stone and Watts arrive, their ships combine to form a yin and yang symbol — which makes the cult happy until things start to go awry.

BEYONCÉ: The Pure Rock’N’Roll in House of Dereon’s Fall Ads

BEYONCÉ, who codesigns the line with her mom, Tina Knowles, departed from her usual glamorous fare and instead, spun a fashion campaign tale chock-full of rock 'n' roll attitude. We're looking at a decidedly edgier BeyoncĂ© — treating a stark desert landscape like it's her very own catwalk, no less — in the latest batch of House of Dereon ads.

The singer looks amazing, but that comes as no surprise. This time around, we're really digging the collection's commitment to subversive wares and punched-up details. From corseted zipper-pull crop tops to thigh-high slit leopard-printed maxi skirts, there's a hint of Beyoncé's personal style in every shot.

Giorgio Armani: In Honor of His 78th Birthday

At age 78, with his trim figure, tanned skin, and jet-set lifestyle, the visionary designer seems to embody that philosophy to a T — a supersleek black one knit from the finest cotton, of course. "I love things that age well — things that don't date, that stand the test of time, and that become living examples of the absolute best," Giorgio Armani has said.

Whether aboard his $60 million yacht or entertaining friends at one of his nine homes or kicking back on his private island in the Ionian Sea, Armani knows a thing or two about maintaining the good life — and he should. Since launching his eponymous line in 1975, Armani has worked tirelessly to become Italy's most successful and iconic designer. His first year in business he made just $14,000; in 2012 the Armani empire — which includes ready-to-wear, couture, accessories, menswear, beauty, home goods, and a chain of hotels — is worth an estimated $7.2 billion.

In honor of our favorite sneaker-wearing, Mercedes-driving, beach-lounging designer's July 11 birthday, here are 78 fabulous pictures that are almost as fabulous as Giorgio Armani himself.

I have Sacrificed My LIFE says ARMANI

In an interview in Elle UK's September issue the designer Giorgio Armani said: "Life, I have sacrificed life. The life of a young man when I first started out and the life of a grown man at the age I am now."

Armani, who turned 78 last month, is both CEO and creative director of his business, which he owns outright without any outside investors. He says building his empire made having time for friendships a difficult challenge.

"It is even more so now. Even harder, which is very sad because life is all about friendships, discovering people's personalities, falling in love, not just once or twice, but often. In a word, life. To live in the world. For example, I don't know Milan. People tell me of Milan," said the designer, who has lived in the city for over half a century.

His personal life isn't the only sacrifice Armani has made for the sake of his business. He told WSJ. Magazine in June that his penchant for exercise once put him in the hospital.

Giorgio Armani and Lady Gaga

Giorgio Armani has entered into a multimillion-dollar partnership with Lady Gaga. The relationship is being shepherded by Armani's niece Roberta Armani, who heads up VIP relations for the company; she contacted Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti last November after seeing the singer perform live at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, wanting to see if Lady Gaga would consider wearing Armani for the Grammy Awards. Giorgio Armani sketched out three designs for the occasion — all of which Gaga ended up wearing.

It is unusual for Armani to design specifically for one person — brand loyalists like Cate Blanchett and Michelle Pfeiffer typically chose existing outfits from the collections — but, Roberta Armani says, "It wouldn't be possible to give Gaga a look from the collection because she wears pieces of art. It's theatrical." She adds that Lady Gaga has helped the company think younger: "A huge company like Giorgio Armani has the duty to always be alert to trends and what appeals to young people
Post-Grammys, Gaga reached out to Armani about her Alejandro video — she wanted tight black military-style leather suits for the male dancers; the suits not only showed up in the video, but in the Emporio Armani men's fashion show in June (the "Alejandro" video played on the runway backdrop). Armani has since dressed Lady Gaga for the MTV Video Music Awards, her appearance on American Idol, and for her "Monster Ball" concert tour. He's soon to start working on costumes for her concert in Italy in December. But the two have yet to meet.

The Flower-Filled Dior Couture Set (behind the scenes)

Raf Simons staged his couture debut for Christian Dior by using over a million flowers covering the mansion in Paris where. The process took several days — plus a team of florists, truck drivers, and set designers — to pull off. Workers started cutting and packaging the flowers three days before the show, then began a two-day installation process that took all weekend. Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, and Azzedine Alaia arrived for the show on Monday, July 2, five rooms had been covered with delphinium, orchids, zinnia, golden rods, Queen Anne's lace, and roses in a variety of colors.

Bar Rafaeli and Her New Lingerie Line

Bar Refaeli shows off her new lingerie line, under.me, while looking sporty on the court in this recently released video. "My work means I'm traveling all the time, rushing from city to city and wearing the most incredible, elaborate designs. I love it, but on my downtime I just want to relax and be myself," Refaeli says. "That's the idea behind under.me — a focused collection of beautifully made basics that look good and feel amazing." As of right now, the line — which is priced from $7.50 to $25 — is only available online in the UK.

Tom Ford’s Entire Fall 2012 Collection

He has made a point of keeping his women's wear collections under wraps for months after he shows them — but today, he's given the world a first look at his Fall 2012 line.

It's ultraluxurious — Ford didn't hesitate to use brightly colored exotic skins. And because of that — and stylistic details like strong pointed shoulders and aggressive metal hardware on bags and dresses – this collection is one of Ford's strongest and most wearable to date. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence have worn dresses from the collection on various red carpets, but the video includes images of every dress, coat, and shoe Ford created for Fall.

The Full Dior Secret Garden Film

Filmed in Versailles by fashion image masters Inez and Vinoodh, Dior's latest film, Secret Garden, features models Daria Strokous, Melissa Stasiuk, and Xiao Wen Ju running like mad through the breathtaking hallways and gardens of the famed chateau. It's finally here — and it's totally gorgeous. Dressed (and at times also slightly undressed) in the label's pre-Fall 2012 collection, the girls are the picture of elegance, while Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" provides the perfect, haunting soundtrack.

Christian Dior made direct reference to the palace in several of his first collections, and in 1955 even created an embroidery thread which he dubbed the "Versailles gold braid." This isn't the first time the iconic label has used Versailles as inspiration.  In 2007, the house's then designer John Galliano staged the label's 60th anniversary couture show in the palace's Orangerie. More recently, the 2011 Dior J'adore fragrance ad starring Charlize Theron was filmed by Jean-Jacques Annaud in the castle's storied Hall of Mirrors.

Mila Kunis Stars in Miss Dior Video

Fall 2012 film for Miss Dior: Mila Kunis took on a character she knows well — a woman surrounded by paparazzi. Like the brand's print ads, the film was directed by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Carine Roitfeld. In it, Kunis demurely allows a pack of photographers to follow her to various locations around Los Angeles and obligingly smiles and sighs while they document her every move. A glimpse at the film below.

Karl Lagerfeld and His Olympics Collection at Selfridges in London

Karl Lagerfeld says his Olympics-themed collection, which he unveiled and celebrated with a party at Selfridges in London Tuesday night, is an exercise in laughing at himself.

"The drama of this collection isn't a drama," the designer said. "It's a joke. It's an inspiration. In a way, it's me. So I have to be careful not to get too much into it, because I don't expect everybody to dress like me. That's why I like this collection with the t-shirt to make a joke out of me, because I think I'm a cartoon."

Others at the event took Lagerfeld a little more seriously — Daphne Guinness, Alison Mosshart, and Hilary Alexander attended the event along with a host of celebrities like Rosario Dawson and Harley Viera-Newton.

Naturally, as the collection has an athletic bent, Lagerfeld spoke to approaching design the same way athletes play sports.

"I think inspiration is a muscle, and this muscle has to be used all the time," Lagerfeld said. "The more you do, the more ideas you have. I don't believe in waiting for inspiration on beaches."

A look at the fruit of Lagerfeld's labor — plus interviews with some of his chicest fans — in the video.

Lady Gaga Vogue Shoot (behind the scenes)

Lady Gaga's September cover of Vogue's: The clip is set to the singer's track "Hair." And what could be more appropriate for a minute-and-a-half-long series of shots that watch the wind blowing through the highly teased mass of golden fiber? The video also sees Gaga changing into and out of several ensembles, including pieces from Marc Jacobs and milliner Stephen Jones. At the end, the singer — taking care to make sure the wig is out of the way — thanks photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott with a kiss on the cheek. A behind-the-scenes look in the video below:

Vogue September 2012 Cover: Lady Gaga

If you can peel your eyes away from the stunning cover — a Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott-lensed portrait of Lady Gaga wearing a gown by Marc Jacobs — there are 916 pages of fashion to behold in Vogue's September 2012 issue.

The issue marks Lady Gaga's second appearance on the cover (she also covered the March 2011 issue) and Vogue's 120th anniversary. It's also the biggest issue in the magazine's history, exceeding the previous record of 840 pages set in September 2007.

The issue will be on newsstands on Aug. 14, and promises a profile on Chelsea Clinton, a story that frames hair as the new makeup, and a look back at the last 120 years of Vogue's history. For now, a look at Gaga's cover — and the magazine's very first cover from 1892 — here in the gallery.
